Decorating on a Budget

December 13, 2020

Anyone who has ever decorated or re-decorated a home, or even a room, knows how quickly costs can rise. Most people typically underestimate how much they will need to spend to get the aesthetic they want. We want to share some tips on how to decorate any space on a budget. No matter what your budget is, we have ways to help you stay within it. We have talked about sticking to your budget before, but here we will go into more detail about how to accomplish this without sacrificing quality or style.

Know what you want. If you want to stick to a budget, the best way to start is to have an idea of what you want the end result to look like. Decide what color palette you want, and what design aesthetic you want to achieve, as well as a general idea on the lighting and furniture styles you are shopping for.

Spend on key pieces. Your next step is to decide what pieces of décor you want to invest in. A good way to figure this out is to think about what you want people to notice when they walk into the space. This may be different for each person, so think about what is important to you. For example, if you want a statement sofa for your living room, invest in that. Typically, you want to spend more of your budget on larger pieces of furniture, so they will last you.

Save on accessories. It is much easier to swap out your smaller and usually less expensive accent pieces than your larger furniture. This does not mean purchasing low quality items, but I would not recommend splurging on something like a trendy knick-knack or area rug. By following this rule, you can change out your accessories if you tire of them without mourning the price tag.

Shop sales. This may seem obvious, but many people tend to get impatient when decorating and want to buy everything at once. If you are patient and strategically shop sales or holidays, you can get great quality pieces at discounted prices. Almost all companies and websites have sales from time to time, so keep an eye out for those!

Think timeless. If you are trying to limit your spending and avoid re-purchasing home décor often, go for classic looks. As tempting as it may be to go full on farmhouse or industrial, you might want to go for a traditional or even transitional design style. That way, your furniture and décor won’t look dated, but timeless instead.

When in doubt, less is more. It’s better to have a few key pieces that you truly love, than to risk cluttering up your space trying to achieve a certain look. By using these basic concepts, you can truly create a beautiful home on any budget.
