One of the most common questions designers are asked is how to select lighting, specifically for the bedroom. This is where you start and end your day, and you want your lighting choices to flow and fit your style, but also be functional. A great way to do this is by incorporating several different types of lighting. Table and floor lamps, sconces, chandeliers and pendant lighting all offer varying degrees of light and layering these will help your space feel complete.
Once you decide on your design aesthetic (i.e. traditional, modern, rustic, etc.) spend some time assessing the natural light in your bedroom. How much artificial light you should add to your space depends on how many windows you have and the direction they face. For example, if you have many large windows and lots of natural light, you will not need as many lighting fixtures, but if the opposite is true, you may want to add more.
Some other helpful tips include choosing a more sheer style curtain that will allow you to incorporate natural light as opposed to black-out style curtains, putting lights on dimmers and avoiding exposed bulbs, as this can strain the eyes and affect sleep patterns. Using these simple ideas, you can ensure your bedroom is a well-lit and relaxing space.
